Even if you’re not camping or hiking in the woods, you’re still at risk for ticks and mosquito bites. A deeper look at these bugs reveals their true nature. In your own yard and garden, you and your family are most at risk of contracting common tick-borne illnesses. These typical tick questions will help you better safeguard your family: Our Sag Harbor tick & mosquito spraying professionals are here to answer any questions or concerns you may have on this topic.

When are they most active?

Ticks in your neighborhood may be active all year, depending on where you reside. Tick activity, on the other hand, often peaks from April to September. It rises when the weather warms, and as humans and animals become more active outdoors.

Tick bites are caused by immature, pinhead-sized ticks known as nymphs, which account for around 98% of all tick bites. From May to July, nymph activity peaks, as does the spread of tick-borne infections such as Lyme disease.

Where do they typically hide

Ticks may seem to fall from tree branches because they are often discovered hiding in hair. They do, however, begin closer to the ground. Naturalized or unmowed regions with weeds and long grasses (like tall fescue) are popular hiding sites, particularly when it’s humid and shaded. Ticks go into mowed areas when lawns are close. However, more than 80% of them remain inside the first 9 feet of the grass. Ticks love to hang out in low-lying ground covers and low-hanging bushes in gardens and foundation plantings.

They usually latch on to people or animals that brush up against grasses or plants. Ticks then move upward, looking for a place to bite and eat. Ticks picked up during routine household activities such as gardening, backyard play, or entertaining account for around 75% of tick bites.

Why is Tick Control So Important?

Tick infestations do not go away on their own; rather, they increase. Ticks carrying the bacterium that causes Lyme disease deposit their eggs in batches of 3,000 or more. Before dying, some ticks may deposit up to 15,000 eggs. Ticks that have not been treated may survive for many years, and certain varieties can even be found inside.
